Step 1. Prepare these items: a brand‑new calligraphy brush, tap water or lukewarm water (around 30–40°C; do not use hot water), a clean container such as a small bowl or cup, and clean paper towels.
Step 2. Use your thumb and index finger to gently loosen the bristles, working from the tip toward the base of the brush. You do not need to fully unfurl the bristles; opening about 70% is sufficient. A few stray short hairs falling out during this process are normal.
Step 3. Rinse off all leftover glue from the bristles under running water or inside your water container.
Step 4. Blot the bristles dry with thick paper towels. Smooth the hairs with your fingers to reshape the brush back into a tapered cone point. The brush is now ready for ink.
Important Notes
- Hot water damages animal bristles.
- Do not soak bamboo handles for long; they may crack.
- Try writing with clean water first to condition the brush.
- Clean and dry fully after each use, or leftover ink will harden the brush head.
